Singing bowl massage

In a sound massage, also singing bowl massage, specially made singing bowls of different fundamental frequency and different sizes are placed on the clothed body and struck or rubbed or held directly over the body, without touching it. In this way, the sound of the generated sound is transmitted to the body. This is perceived as vibration in the body. The sound massage should have a relaxing and soothing effect in the wellness area and is recommended for example in the case of Strength. The principle is also called phonophoresis. In the esoteric field, sound therapies are offered in which the singing bowls are brought into connection with the chakras.

Principle and effect

The effect of the sound massage is explained on the one hand by the fact that the human body consists predominantly of water, which is set in motion by the sound waves. This effect ultimately works like an internal massage of the body cells. Physical and mental tensions and blockages should be solved in this way. There is no scientific evidence for this theory. The other explanation assumes that certain sounds produced by singing bowls can be assigned to and influence the various chakras. In the case of "disturbances" of the chakras, these should then be harmonized and positively influenced with the help of the sound massage.

Client at the sound massage

In the wellness area singing bowls are selected according to personal preference; The sound massage should simply promote relaxation. In a so-called energetic approach in the field of esotericism, the sound and vibration of the singing bowls allegedly solve blockages in the "subtle", ie mental-spiritual area. Sometimes the users of the sound massage try to introduce the sound into both the aura and the chakras in order to "energetically enrich" them. Scientifically, this approach can not be understood. In body therapy, according to the therapists, the sound massage can assist in the processing of trauma. The sounds should penetrate the "body memory" and solve the trauma.

To the origin

The origin of singing bowls is believed to be in India and in the Himalayas, in the area of today's Tibet. It is a traditional kitchenware. However, this can not be clearly proven. There are also assumptions that they may have served as sacrificial bowls or for religious purposes in their origin. The craftsmanship of the bowls was almost completely abandoned in the Himalayan region between 1900 and 1940.
In the West, however, around the 1980s, the belief that the Tibetan metal bowls were "singing bowls" arose, and they undoubtedly can be used to produce sounds. That the sound therapy is an ancient Buddhist method, which is often claimed in the Western esoteric scene, can not be proven.
