Medical gymnastics is a form of therapy aimed at restoring, improving, or maintaining the mobility and functionality of the body. It is performed by physiotherapists and osteopaths.
- restoration, maintenance, and promotion of health
- focus on pain relief
Treatment:
Medical gymnastics in physiotherapy is based on the patient's complaints, as well as their functional and movement-related limitations, which are determined during the physiotherapeutic assessment. It includes diagnostic approaches, clinically reasoned methods (clinical reasoning), educational elements, and manual therapy. Depending on the need, treatment can be supplemented with natural physical stimuli such as heat, cold, pressure, radiation, or electricity.
A key goal is to promote the patient’s own activity, such as through coordinated muscle movements and conscious body awareness. The therapy is tailored to the patient's anatomical, physiological, motivational, and cognitive conditions.
The treatment has two main objectives:
- To stimulate natural bodily responses, such as motor learning, muscle building, and metabolic activation.
- To achieve a better understanding of the own body and to encourage independent and responsible management of health resources.
