Muscle diseases are referred to as myopathies. With the exception of cardiomyopathy, striated skeletal muscle is generally meant here. The principal symptom of all myopathies is muscle weakness. Sensitivity is never affected pure myopathies. Other syndromes that are also associated with a weakness of the muscles but delineated from myopathies include motor neuron disorders (such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and spinal muscular atrophy) and motor endplate disorders (such as myasthenia and Lambert-Eaton syndrome).
Physiotherapy treatment encompasses:
- Optimizing the functions of the locomotor system (coordination)
- Maintaining or improving strength of the existing functioning musculature
- Delay of deformities, especially joint contractures and scoliosis
- Making everyday tasks easier
- Attaining orthostatic function
- Attaining respiratory function
Passive physiotherapeutic exercise exercises, in which case the therapist performs the movements, are one option; joint movements are carried out to the point of resistance or pain. Studies have shown that muscle function can be improved through targeted treatment of contractures by stretching or also surgery.
