- Chronic and acute pain of the musculature and ligaments
- Fractures
- Reduction of scar tissue tension
- Chronic illnesses
Ultrasound forms part of both physical therapy and electrotherapy. It is a medical treatment method for pain reduction, and supports the body's self-healing process. In ultrasound, frequencies between 20 kHz und 800 kHz are used.
Treatment
In this type of therapy, continuous or intermittant ultrasound may be used. The type of frequency plays a large role in the overall duration of treatment and intensity of sound.
Ultrasound can be used to treat the site of injury locally, or to stimulate the connected nerves. Treatment of one area usually falls between one and two minutes. Chronic disorders can be treated up to ten minutes, depending on their severity.
Effect
Ultrasound affects tissue in both a mechanical and thermal way.
The mechanical effect involves vibration: the umderlying tissue is compressed and expanded in an intense way, similar to the effect of a deep-tissue massage.
The thermal effect involves sound absorption by the tissue.
Indications
Typical indicationen include chronic or acute pain of the muscles or nerves, fractures and scar tissue problems.
